Antihistamines block the effects of histamine, which causes sneezing, itching, and wheezing. Antihistamines and nasal decongestants are most often used for short term allergy relief.

Newer antihistamines such as Allegra, Claritin, Clarinex and Zyrtec are less likely to cause sedation and, therefore, have become quite popular. Allegra, until recently, was available only as a pill, which limited its use for younger children. • are taking an MAO inhibitor (a medication for depression) or have stopped taking an MAO inhibitor within 14 days;
• retain urine;
• have narrow-angle glaucoma;
• or have severe high blood pressure or severe heart disease
